Our goal is to support the development of skilled trades and training skills for students in the Nishnawbe Aski Nation traditional territory. Our Trades programs are community-driven and may take place in NAN communities or at the Thunder Bay campus.
We know that accessing skilled trades training can be difficult for First Nations communities. Oshki-Wenjack has a funded in-community apprenticeship training program to 2027 and is accepting expressions of interest from NAN communities.
Our Level 1 Apprenticeship programs offer training in six trades:
For fly in communities, we work with our partners to deliver training in the community, and we deploy the mobile training lab to road access communities.
Oshki-Wenjack works closely with communities to create Indigenous-led pathways into trades and apprenticeships. Our approach focuses on diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Students can choose different pathways, including academic upgrading, community-based or project-based trades training, micro-credential programs, on-the-job training, and opportunities to "level up" and become certified journeypersons.
Our training programs are designed to address the challenges remote and rural communities face in maintaining infrastructure, relying on outside labor, and creating local job opportunities. We also want to help youth in these communities pursue careers in the skilled trades to close the local labor gap.
The LEVEL-UP project will offer nine intakes of trades and apprenticeship programs before 2027, with 10 students in each intake. The programs will provide Level 1 in-class training in one of the six trades based on the needs of each community and industry in the NAN region. Communities will use the mobile training model and adapt the apprenticeship programs to meet the unique interests and skills of their students.
